My Tomato Planting

2025-06-10

‍I started the tomatoes indoors under lights. Seeds went into 4” pots of growing medium.

‍When the seedlings showed their true leaves I repotted them into 6” pots. I planted them as deep as I could to give the roots more room to grow.

‍The cold and rainy weather delayed my transplanting outdoors until June 2. The delay actually allowed the plants to grow good roots and were sturdy enough to put in the ground.

‍I dug deep holes and spread some bone meal in the bottom. Each plant went in according to the plan.

‍Each plant needs four square feet. The bed is 24 feet long and 4 feet wide for a total area of 96 square feet. This is enough room for 24 tomato plants.

I laid out soaker hose at 10” spacing so each plant receives water from two sides.

‍The middle bed will have all the direct seeded vegetables.

‍Squirrels and chipmunks dig for acorns and destroy the seed bed so again this year I tried to minimize the damage.

‍My plan was to build cages  with 2 X 2 lumber and 1/4” hardware cloth on the sides and a hinged top. The first cage is shown.
